Bach (1685 \u2013 1750)<\/p>\r\nJ.S. BACH, born 1685, stemmed from the 7th generation of an important musicians\u2019 \r\nfamily from Thuringia. The youngest amongst 8 siblings of his parents, Elisabeth and \r\nAmbrosius Bach who was the court musician with the Dukes of Eisenach, he learned \r\nto play the harpsichord, the violin and the organ from early childhood. He was noticed \r\nas an excellent student in the Latin School of Eisenach – also due to the beauty and \r\naccuracy of his voice. \r\nY2008-A03 Booklet 28s 4-4.indd 8 19.02.20 12:57 \r\nFrom his most tender childhood onwards he became familiar with death and the \r\nHereafter: at the age of six he had already lost three brothers and one sister, at 35 he \r\nlost his wife, at 37 two more brothers, and from the 20 children stemming from his two \r\nmarriages 11 died during his lifetime. But the hardest loss that shook him most during \r\nhis childhood was the sudden death of both his parents: within a few months he became \r\na total orphan. He was not ten years old. Even as an adult he kept this simplicity \r\nand freshness from his childhood which made his true value. That\u2019s how when \r\nhe was 44 years old, he exclaimed joyfull and ardently in his St.Matthew Passion: \r\n\u201cI want to give You my heart! … is the world too small for You, then, You should be more \r\nY2008-A03 Booklet 28s 4-4.indd 9 19.02.20 12:57 \r\nto me alone than the entire world \u2026 and than the heaven!\u201d, as an answer to little Jesus in \r\nthe straw\u2019s constant plea: \u201cDO YOU WANT A BIT FROM ME?\u201d (I am leaving but I\u2019m \r\ngiving you my body and blood.) Johann Sebastian, the most acclaimed organ virtuoso of \r\nhis time, astounded his many admirers with his enthusiasm and his infantile freshness: \u201cI \r\nplay for the biggest musician in the world. Maybe he is not always here but I\u2019m always \r\nplaying as if he always was present.\u201d So much truth in so much simplicity! \r\nConvinced of only being an instrument in God\u2019s hands he stayed unimpressed by the \r\npraise of others. No matter if he played, conducted, sang, taught or composed his motto \r\nstays: \u201cSoli Deo Gloria\u201d (The glory belongs only to god.). \u201cThe soul resting in Jesus\u2019 \r\nhands\u201d is Johann Sebastian\u2019s soul: bare through simplicity, transparent, in full devotion to \r\nJesus. To understand his soul we hear \u201cJesus stays my joy\u201d (Jesu, joy of man\u2019s desiring), \r\na chorale that he put into music following the death of one of his children. Sharing his \r\npain with \u201chis Jesus\u201d whom he loved so much he continued his path unwaveringly. \r\nAnd, after everything has been said, the surprise followed immediately: in an instant \r\nof eternity Jesus descended profoundly into his heart and brought him back his child. \r\nA beam of bliss and peace lightens up his face and life takes its now alleviated course. \r\nTherefore it is really necessary for me to sing this choral in a blithely tempo. \r\n\u201cTo see his Jesus\u201d had always been the goal of his existence, his highest good.
